As for our flamingo friends, this just goes to show how the harshest environments can be a sanctuary for some animals. They quickly built stretchers and carried the injured to land in the nick of time.Įven though you could survive Lake Natron’s waters, I’d stick to a swimming pool if I were you. Incredibly, one of the passengers managed to struggle to shore and alerted some of the Masai tribespeople nearby. The pilot suffered a broken leg, and another passenger had a broken hip. A group of wildlife videographers plunged Lake Natron’s toxicity when their helicopter crashed. In 2007, another kind of bird flew straight into this chemical cocktail. Turns out, the lake’s toxic waters provide a safe haven from predators, making it perfect flamingo flocking grounds. Despite so many birds dying in Lake Natron, there is a particular species flourishing. Kind of like that one time in the office. He theorized, since the lake is so mirror-like and reflective, the birds must have flown right into it. He discovered several stone birds and other unlucky animals in the dry season when the water had receded. In 2013, wildlife photographer Nick Brandt was one of the first to document this phenomenon. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! Any birds that happen to take a dive and don’t make it out become calcified in a hardened, stonelike husk. ![]() The whole chemical composition is extremely alkaline, with pH levels of 10.5 close to matching ammonia (NH3). ![]() Releasing into the water, this mix of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate were key ingredients once used in Egyptian mummification, creating the perfect preservative in lake form. The volcano spews a rare kind of lava rich in sodium (Na) and potassium carbonate (K2CO3), called Natrocarbonatite, or Natron for short.

With Roon it seemed like I could control all my networked systems with a ton of different devices in the house versus A+ which I could not. I was very disappointed because I love the Roon interface, multi-device capabilities, artist & album info, etc. Roon sounded somewhat flat, lacking atmosphere and depth in comparison. A+ had better detail and body to the sound. ![]() On sound quality, I preferred A+ over Roon. I decided to audition Roon in early 2018 (not sure what version) with the free trial, mainly because of the multi-room, multi-device capabilities. On both counts, the move to A+ was clearly superior to iTunes. ![]() Most important to me is sound quality and reliability. I have been using Audirvana Plus for several years and Roon for almost a year. Late to the party, but I'll add my comments. Roon works this way but they don’t suggest it in there Knowledgebase. Anyhow, just wondering if some who are saying Roon is inferior may be deploying the core and player on one single device which is connected to the DAC. I believe this is to isolate the audio rig including DAC and player from noise generated by the hardware the core is running on, but I’m not totally sure on the reasoning behind this. The core is supposed to be connected via Ethernet for maximum SQ. Not sure this is proven to have an effect though.įinally, for those saying Roon doesn’t sound quite as good as Audirvana or others, Roon’s Knowledge base indicates that to maximize sound quality, the Roon “core” must be physically separated from the hardware running the player that is connected to the DAC. On another note, my Mac storage is hybrid solid state and mechanical, which in theory is not supposed to be as good as pure solid state due to added noise on the USB line as well as emitted noise. I am using a Mac Mini, “headless” without a keyboard mouse or display and connected directly to my DAC via USB. Can I ask what you have Audirvana running on? Mahler123, you mentioned you don’t want to use a PC. ![]() ![]() Reinforcing bars shall be permitted to be bonded together by the usual steel tie wires or other effective means.1 (12.7-mm) diameter, or consisting of at least 20 ft (6.1 m) of bare copper conductor not smaller than No. (50.8 mm) of concrete, located within and near the bottom of a concrete foundation or footing that is in direct contact with the earth, consisting of at least 20 ft (6.1 m) of one or more bare or zinc galvanized or other electrically conductive coated steel reinforcing bars or rods of not less than ½-in. The concrete-encased electrode is described in Section 250-50(c) of the NEC, which reads: The concrete-encased electrode is often referred to as a Ufer ground, although the word “Ufer” does not appear in the text of the Code. An effective, reliable grounding electrode or grounding electrode system is required to be used where electrical services and systems are employed. The grounding electrode system is the foundation of the electrical safety system. The grounding electrodes required to be used make up the grounding electrode system and are required to do so because they are inherent to the construction of the building. Electrical systems and metal enclosures are grounded to limit the voltage on them due to contact with higher voltage lines protect against lightning strikes and to stabilize the voltage during normal operations. The lowest possible impedance connection to the earth is sought from the grounding electrode or grounding electrode system. This is a characteristic of the building footings and foundation that are expected to be in place and continue to exist as long as the building is required to remain standing.Ī grounding electrode is defined as a conducting element that connects electrical systems and/or equipment to the earth. ![]() The word “permanent” is a substantial word related to something established to be in place for a long period of time. These structures have some commonalities both include concrete and reinforcing bars, which establish a good structural connection to the earth and are permanent elements required for the construction of either building. An example would be comparing a simple monolithic slab on grade for a single-family dwelling to a complex concrete and steel foundation for a multi-story high-rise structure. Concrete footings and foundations can vary from the elementary in design to the very complex. The larger the building, the larger the footings or foundation will need to be to carry the structural load of the building. Footings and foundations are typically constructed using concrete and reinforcing rods or bars for structural strength. For the building to be structurally sound and stable, a substantial foundation must be established to bring the structure out of the ground. A short blade, about a foot long, made of 420 stainless. The first one I ever encountered was a Camillus Carnivore machete. These kinds of stainless steel weapons are definitely unsafe to actually use for cutting.īut the truth is, some grades of stainless steel, properly tempered, can absolutely make functional cutting tools meant to take significant impacts. These are usually made in Pakistan and have abysmal construction quality, typically left untempered or with an improper temper. Many of us have had the learning experience of buying cheap 440 stainless swords from the mall, flea market, or online. It’s conventional sword collecting wisdom to avoid stainless steel weapons – stainless steel sword blades are for decorative pieces only and anything longer than 12” is considered likely to break under the shock of impact. Second, the blade is made of 7CR13 stainless steel, as opposed to the typical 1055 carbon steel blades or similar alloys on my other axes and tomahawks. ![]() But I know that it does occasionally happen, and I had not yet tested any United Cutlery weapons with nylon handles. I’ve used a number of tomahawks and axes with synthetic handles and haven’t personally broken one, despite hard use. There’s a couple of things about the Karito that made me wonder if it would hold up to aggressive cutting. I requested a review sample and was kindly obliged. I had seen this axe teased on the United Cutlery Facebook page, along with many of you, and I was curious to see if it would hold up to real use. I had just finished up my review of the Honshu Historic Single Handed Sword when my contact at BudK asked if there was anything else I wanted to review. In the interest of full disclosure, I was sent this axe for free, in exchange for a review. The only real question for me was how functional this axe would be for backyard cutting. You probably either loved it or hated it the moment you saw it. It’s kind of a polarizing design, as far as aesthetics go. Looks pretty outrageous, like something a marauding Space Viking would brandish as he prepares to breach your airlock. So you’ve probably seen this new battle axe United Cutlery just put out.
